As you are still  here I thought I would talk a little bit about emotional states as anxiety is an emotional state, some states empower you  and some states hold us back but they are just states. Most people are unaware that with hypnosis training you can learn how to control your body mind and get the life you truly desire. Hypnosis for anxiety is the key as it is the opposite emotional state to anxiety and is a state of well-being.

Hypnosis for anxiety

Some states feel better than others. Some states hold you back but you can get control of them. At the start of each day, you can  consider “what would be the best state for me to be in today?” Then act throughout the day “as if” you were already in that state.

If you want to be free of anxiety ask your self what is the most empowered emotional state you want instead, then start to adopt the physiology of that- this can help you take charge rather than be a passenger to it. Your the thinker of your thoughts so think positive thoughts, resist the temptation to think about problems. Anxiety is often the snowball of negative thoughts and emotions.

So in a nut shell unless I am going to help you fast, you should notice what you do that works and do more of that. The more you are used to identifying the successes and strategies that lead to your success, the more able you are to employ them and notice when you are not employing them. This gives you the chance to take corrective action from the feedback.

If you want to change your life fast then work with an expert!  >> Hypnotherapy in London

Jump on in and notice what you notice. Also, remember the four stages of learning:

  • Unconscious incompetence – “I don’t know that I don’t know”
  • Conscious incompetence – “I know what I want but don’t know how to do it”
  • Conscious competence – “I know how to do it but I have to think about it”
  • Unconscious competence – “I know how to do and don’t have to pay conscious attention to it”

So:

  • Acknowledge the state and take action to change it : “I’m anxious”, then ask yourself “What else do I need?”

Am I anxious because …

  • There is missing information? (environment)
  • I don’t know what to do? (behaviour)
  • I don’t know how to do something? (capability)
  • It conflicts with my beliefs and values? (beliefs and values)
  • It’s not in keeping with my sense of self? (identity)
  • I am engaging in negative self talk? (behaviour)

    The NLP Communications Model

Every school boy knows that science never proves anything. Yes it sometimes proves hypotheses, sometimes even disproves them. We can say that ‘proof’ arrived at by some process of perception may imply that such and such a supposition causes such and such an abstraction. How sound can our ‘truth’ of perception, based on an induction from a perception be? We base our realities on the basis of the rule of parsimony or Occam’s razor. That is a preference for the simplest assumption that will fit the facts.

If we consider that our own perceptual filters, our beliefs and values (some of which we may not even be consciously aware of) influence what we see, what we hear and what we feel. What we expect, will be in our map of the world.

    >>>NLP Courses in London

The epistemological question ‘How do we know?’ is fundamental to NLP. The use of this question alone begins to explore your map of the world and exploration is change – no matter how small.

We experience whatever is out there (reality) through our own neural circuits. So whatever radiation is received by say our eyes is passed through our receptors and converted into information for the brain. The brain then does some interpretation to create the image that we see with our eyes. This is what we see in the moment, not a memory of the event.

When we recall a memory we access some part of our coded map of the world. Do you see the memory in full colour? Is it through your own eyes / can you see yourself? Do you recall all of the sounds clearly? More interestingly – do you recall the event exactly as you first coded it or could it have been mysteriously altered!

In real time the image we see has first been transformed by our receptors – know as the f1 transforms then the brain has interpreted these transformed signals to produce what we see at any given moment – First Access FA That’s what you are experiencing now.

Because of the limitations of our biological filters, our receptors are limited the range of radiation we can detect; we are further limited by our own filters. Information is deleted, distorted and generalised at an unconscious level and this is as we are seeing, feeling and hearing ‘reality’ at any given time.

After the actual event of seeing or hearing or feeling something we encode this information into our memory. The memory encoding process is known as the natural language transforms or f2 transforms. We may then further alter our perceptions as we ascribe meaning to what has happened, we may even label our experiences or our interpretation of our experiences. Each time we access a memory the process of deletion, distortion and generalisation occur again.

The operating belief ‘The map is not the territory’ was made famous by Alfred Korzybski considering what we now know the territory is not even the territory.

    F1 Transforms:
The set of transformations that occur between the sensory receptors and cortex, to create the VAKOG representation. The neurological processes of F1 are influenced by filters created by conditioning (e.g. deeply held values, beliefs & primal meta programs.

    First Access:
Our first representation of the world. FA has been heavily transformed as a result of F1 transforms. The FA representation is sensory based and does not have language attached.

    F2 Transforms:
The process of coding the sensory based FA representation. We map the data at FA onto our internal maps (made up of internal pictures, sounds and feelings, and natural language hierarchies.) The F2 transforms are influenced by values, beliefs, Metaprograms and memories (conscious and unconscious)

    Linguistic Representation:
This is the internal linguistic mental map which has been subject to F2 transforms and is presented using natural language.

      Synaesthesia in NLP

Visit Our Homepage To Learn More How To Use And Control Your Emotions Via Hypnosis And NLP:
      >>>Hypnotherapist & NLP Coach at London Bridge

Can you imagine what it would be like to hear yellow music or to taste pointy chicken? Synaesthesia, which literally means a “feeling together”, occurs when one sense links with another. Two or more rep systems are accessed simultaneously. For example, some people may see sounds as colours, feel pictures as sensations or taste shapes. One synaesthete stated; “New York is runny eggs. London is mashed potato, but it’s extremely lumpy mashed potato.”

Dr Jamie Ward (of University College London’s Synaesthesia Research Group) said: "This fascinating phenomenon is a convergence of sensations that are typically experienced independently. Most of us have senses that are neatly segregated, but in synaesthetes, experiencing one sensation may trigger another. For example, a synaesthete hearing or reading the word ‘Monday’ may suddenly see the colour blue, or listening to a saxophone could trigger a sweet taste."

Phobias are an example of a kind of synaesthesia. Often the phobic response (feeling) can be triggered by a visual (AKOG) stimulus. Although the picture may come first, the connection is almost instantaneous, and the two things always occur together.

Sir Francis Galton, the famous geneticist, created the first comprehensive study of the condition during the late 1800s. However, synaesthesia has been neglected until recent years, probably because it causes no real distress to those who have it. In fact, most perceive it as a gift and feel sorry for those who cannot experience it; others don’t even realise that they have it, believing that everyone experiences the world the same way they do.

Therefore, it is difficult to predict what percentage of the world’s population is affected by the condition, and the estimates vary from 1 per 100,000 to 1 per 200.

Synaesthesias are the metaphors of the senses and poetry and writing evoke synaesthesias by the language used.

We all experience synaesthesias. For example:

      • Music can evoke colours, shapes or emotions
      • Pictures can evoke feelings
      • Seeing someone scraping their nails down a blackboard can make us grit our teeth!

They are often used in advertising. For example:

      • A cheeky wine
      • The smooth taste of peanut butter
      • A sparkling drink that slides down the throat like velvet

      Synaesthesia and Eye accessing cues:

With synaesthesias people will exhibit eye accessing cues that are ‘non-standard’ – that is, they may look in other parts of the visual field. This tells you that some kind of processing is taking place. The words they use to describe their experience may also mismatch regular eye movements. For example, they may be looking down while describing a colour.

Sometimes people develop unwanted synaesthesia patterns in that they see/feel, hear/feel or see/hear/feel something not so nice all at the same time. It can be useful to know how to use eye pattern theory to help them dismantle such unwanted synaesthesias.

Hypnotherapy Tip – Rapport Building By Sensory Acuity and Calibration

To find London’s top hypnotists, visit our homepage by clicking the link below:
        >>>London’s Top Clinical Hypnotists

Sensory Acuity is the art of paying attention to minor shifts in skin tone, speech patterns, movement, rhythm, and other non-verbal cues that we all give out as our psychological states change. Noticing these shifts, which can range from minimal to striking in their intensity is the key to calibrating the way an individual is processing their thoughts.

In order to deliberately build rapport with another person, we need to be able to see, hear and feel the rhythms they are using in order to match them. A person’s thought process is very closely tied with their physiology. A dog senses your fear: how did he know if you didn’t tell him. If a friend is depressed, most of us can tell without even talking with them. We pick up these clues from their body: slumped shoulders, eyes downcast, head down, lack of animation. Sensory acuity takes these observations beyond the more obviously recognizable clues and uses the physical feedback in addition to someone’s words to gain as much from communication as possible.

The quality of your communication is dependent at least to some degree on your ability to calibrate to another person’s emotional states, behavioural preferences, and patterns. Snap judgements about what specific behaviours "mean" rarely are accurate. To increase your calibration skills, it’s important to test your results with objective data (ask them!). Without testing, there is no reliable increase in skill.

        >>>Hypnotherapy at London Bridge

        What can we calibrate to?

Here are just a few of the many signals you might wish to learn to notice on a more regular basis.

        •    Blink rate / pattern
        •    Head position / changes
        •    Breathing rate / pattern / shifts
        •    Pupil dilation / contraction
        •    Smiling / frowning
        •    Nostril dilation
        •    Upper / lower lip movement, lower lip swelling with blood
        •    Eyebrow movement / scrunching / lifting
        •    Fingertips on face or lips,
        •    Hands open / closed / tension
        •    Body lean
        •    Tension in body
        •    Shoulders raise quickly & unconsciously
        •    Audio tonal changes when answering
        •    Tension in skin
        •    etc.

Few if any of the above signals "mean" anything in and of themselves. Body Language is not about learning to attach some arbitrary meaning to each of the above. The real goal is in AVOIDING assigning our own meanings to what these signals mean to someone else, and to allow our own calibration skills to determine what each particular set of these and other signals means to someone else.

By letting our subjects teach us what each "set" of signals means, we avoid inappropriate mind-reading, and we learn how to communicate more effectively with each individual. The typical example is in watching people who like to cross their arms, and making the mistake that that behaviour MUST mean that they’re closed to new ideas. They might be very open-minded, and just be most comfortable in that posture. So, with lots of calibration, we find out what each signal or set of signals means to each unique person. And then we can much more effectively read and understand another person’s behaviour.

The Body and nind are part of the same system.  When you think about good things you have the good feelings, and when you think in negative ways you can feel bad.  Attached to this is the way you stand and move you body. They way you use your body results in specfic feelings.  When people cry they tend to look down. To help a friend when they are feeling bad take them for a quick walk, or get them to change the way they stand and get them to look up  this will help them to reduce or eradicate negative feelings. If you want to change you life ..

If you can relate any of these to yourself, then your probably noticed the body mind connection.

          • Our body language of differs according to the emotional state we are in (happy or sad)
          • Changing our physiology can change our mood, for example, working out in the gym after a tiring day
          • We intuitively read a great deal about a person’s emotional state, their thinking etc. from shifts in their body language
          • When engaged in an exciting activity we notice pain less ("it’s only a scratch!")
          • Simply imagining eating something pleasant or unpleasant can cause individuals to salivate or gag!
          • People who believe they will get better actually do heal faster than those who don’t believe (even if the condition is similar)
          • Mental activities such as meditation can affect heart rate, blood flow etc.
          • Athletes who work on their "mental game" tend to perform better than those who don’t (e.g. the phenomenon of ‘choking’)

          So keep in mind:

          • The body shows how / what we are thinking / feeling
          • Changing the body can change the experience
          • Changing our thinking can change how we feel physically

          London Hypnotherapy (4) Strategies

People have many strategies for doing things the way they do. If you want help overcoming a problem that brought you here click below to see a FREE Video on How hypnotherapy can help You.

          >>>London Hypnotherapy Video

          Strategies

People have strategies for what they do, how they feel, how they make decisions. Some of us have strategies which really help us get motivated; feel strong and creative whereas others have strategies which cause problems in their life. Examples of the latter could be shopaholism, losing their temper, being unable to make effective decisions etc.

The interesting thing is that most of us don’t know we actually have strategies because they often run at the other than conscious level. In fat, most people typically are not aware of their pervasive use of strategies.

A strategy is any internal and external set (order, syntax) of experiences which consistently produces a specific outcome. For example, when I’m going to buy something I tend to make a picture (V) of the thing I want in my head, I get the lovely feelings (K) of owning it and then I buy it.

Can anyone see a problem with this?

See (leads to) imagining it in my house (leads to) feeling good (leads to) an easy sale for the shop.

          What strategies do you use?

We use internal processing strategies for everything we do. All of our apparent external behaviours are controlled by internal processing strategies. That means that we use strategies for love, strategies for hate, strategies for learning, strategies for math, parenting, sports, communication, sales, marketing, wealth, poverty, happiness, death, sex, eating, disease, creativity, relaxation, attention and fun. There are strategies for everything.

If you want help with the problem that brought you here with and expert click below to see a free video.

          >>>London Hypnosis and Hypnotherapy Video

How do we make strategies up?

I didn’t consciously decide to shop in the way I mentioned above! We first develop a particular strategy when we are young. We put a series of internal and external experiences together, and made (for example) a decision. Then, at some point when you knew it worked, you generalized the process that you used before in making the decision and said, either consciously or unconsciously, "OK, this is a good way to make a decision", and you then probably used it over and over and over again.

          London Hypnotherapy (5)

          Examples of strategies:

How you got here today, how you decided what seat to sit in

How you decided who to do an important exercise with

How you decided what to eat at lunch

Someone who is better at something than you … are they just lucky or are they using better strategies?

A strategy is what you do in your mind in the process of doing something.

The FANTASTIC NEWS is this. Strategies can be elicited from people, strategies can be learned and strategies can be installed in people!

That’s what Bandler and Grinder did with Milton Erickson. They identified the strategies he used to get outstanding results, modelled and tested them to see which worked and then taught them to others. NLP came into existence because of this. Milton Erickson is the master of hypnosis, many of the patterns used in hypnosis came from his work.

Back to my strategy for buying stuff: "See it", "feel good about it" and "buy it."

That’s a pretty efficient way for making quick decisions, no doubt about it. Problem is that it’s not really effective for buying as I see a lot of things I like and then buy them.

A real life example: I was bored, thinking about being free and having fun, a friend mentioned a motorbike she had to get rid of, I saw myself on the bike flashing along the beach roads of Dorset, I even saw a cute lass on the back of the bike holding on to me for dear life with her head against my shoulder! Now THAT felt good … and the bike was bought inside 5 minutes.

Here’s the catch. I don’t know how to ride a motorbike! I haven’t got any leathers or helmet. I’m usually busy so haven’t had time to learn yet. Result … one bright shiny gorgeous bike in my shed gathering dust. But I will feel fabulous when I do learn! Ha ha :-)

Most strategies that people have can be easily learned or modified, according to whatever our outcome is. And that’s why in NLP one of the presuppositions is that people have all the resources they need. For example, if someone is very decisive at home and they have trouble making decisions at work, one of the things we can do is move their decision-making strategy from home to work.

A Strategy is something someone does in their brain and nervous system that produces a specific result. It’s what I do in my head when I do what I do.

Think about this like baking a cake. When you’re baking, you get all the ingredients, get a bowl, put the ingredients into a bowl in a certain order and do stuff to them. In a recipe, there’s a certain order or sequence of when the elements should go into the recipe. If you put the elements of the cake into the bowl in the wrong order, you’ll get a substantially different outcome.

A strategy is a specific order and sequence of internal and external processes or internal and external experiences that consistently produce a specific outcome. If you reverse the strategy, that is, if you reverse the order and sequence of the strategy, the outcome that you get may be substantially different.

          Artfully Vague Language

Part of Erickson’s approach was that he spoke in an ‘artfully vague’ fashion. For example, if I say "Your arms feel relaxed", you can say "No they don’t". But if I say, "You may be starting to notice certain sensations somewhere in your body", the chances are that you will start to notice them. Artfully vague language can be very useful for all sorts of things, including:

          1.    Pacing a persons experience and leading them in a new direction

          2.    Gathering resources

          3.    Covertly getting them to do things that they would resist if you told them to do it overtly

          4.    Getting access to the extraordinary power of the unconscious mind

Look at it this way. You’re reading this manual, and you’re reading it for a reason, because you have certain things that you want to learn, so you may be interested in discovering how you can put these new learnings to use.

If you re-read that sentence, it sounds specific but is in fact very vague. All the things I’ve said in that sentence are guesses about your experience, but they are vague enough to be true for almost anyone. Let’s take it step by step:

          1.    You’re reading this website.

          OK, that’s definitely true.

          2.    and you’re reading it for a reason

Well, that’s probably true to. Plus, the ‘and’ makes this statement flow nicely on from the previous one

          3.    because you have certain things that you want to learn

Which things? Certain things. Oh, those ones! Well, you didn’t tell me that, but I’m guessing it. And the ‘because’ makes the previous statement even more plausible, because people like there to be reasons for things. It makes the world seem, somehow, more certain!

          4.    so you may be interested in discovering how you can put these new learnings to use..

Well, this is just made up. I don’t know this at all, at all. But if I’ve managed to get you to say ‘yes’ to the previous few statements, you probably said yes to this one too.  This sentence is super-vague, yet it’s the sort of thing that people will agree to, because it sounds specific. In my experience, people will always try to make sense of the things you say to them. This means that the more you are able to use language in this ‘hypnotic’ way, the more influential you will be (whether you’re doing formal hypnosis or not). This is one of the keys to effective influence in any field.

I thought in this post I would address the question that I get asked many times. Is  it true that..

Only some people can be hypnotized?

Everyone can have (and already has had) an experience of hypnosis.

          1. If you’re watching a film and something happens on screen that makes you jump, laugh, cry or feel excited, you’ve been hypnotized.
          1. If you’re driving a long way, and you arrive home and realize you don’t really remember driving the last 20 miles, you’ve been hypnotized.
          1. If you’re listening to someone at lunch telling a story, and your hand stops halfway between your plate and your mouth, suspending your food in the air as you wait for them to finish making a point, you’ve been hypnotised.
          1. If you’ve ever read a book, and you’ve got so into it that you lost all track of time, you’ve been hypnotized.

These are natural, everyday examples of hypnosis. The fact that you’ve felt this (or something like it) means you can go into a hypnotic trance.

A hypnotic trance is merely an altered state of consciousness. People are moving between different states of consciousness all the time. Angry, happy, sad and excited: these words describe specific states of consciousness. Hypnotic trance is just one more to add to the list. Hypnosis or trance simply involves a person having an inward focus. One of the useful things about hypnotic trance is that it is a state where many things are possible.

The idea that not everyone can be hypnotised relates to the fact that some people are not as responsive to a formal hypnotic induction as others. Some forms of hypnosis (E.g. Ericksonian) rely on the flexibility of the hypnotist to help get people to go into trance, but what isn’t mentioned is that if you are a master in NLP and you can use NLP as an application of hypnosis, anyone with a IQ over 80 will  be able to alter their beliefs from having doubts to entering a trance easily. So everyone can be hypnotized as long as the hypnotherapist is highly skilled. I often work with beliefs because once a person believes they can enter a trance they will be able to more easily. Also a top hypnotherapist in London will have if skilled several rapid ways of inducing trance that could be more appropriate than what is commonly used by therapists of a lower skill level.

The Power of Metaphor and storytelling

A metaphor is an indirect way of communicating through a story or figure of speech. It may reveal the culture of an organization or the inner thoughts of an individual. It can also imply a comparison (quiet as a mouse) or parallel the patterns of a problem to offer solutions or suggestions (a fairy tale: The Boy Who Cried Wolf). In NLP, a metaphor includes similes, parables and allegories and is rich in its ability to enhance communication.

The deep structure of our thinking is based on inner feelings, memories, beliefs and values. This is revealed through our behaviours and for individuals is referred to as our personality and in organizations, we call it corporate culture.

At work you may hear a person say ‘We need more ammunition’, ‘put on your flak jacket’ or ‘bring out the big artillery.’ These are figures of speech and reveal the inner beliefs of the person (i.e. work is seen as war) or if held by a group of people the culture of an organization or team. Other people may see work as a ‘zoo’ or life as something to be endured and their actions and words will reflect this. The metaphor you have for life, or work or home will colour how you see things, will surface in your behaviours and in the words you use, and will influence your interactions with others. Understanding a person’s or an organization’s metaphor can provide insights to their feelings, memories, beliefs and values and provide you with an opportunity to help.

"What is REAL?" asked the Rabbit one day.  "Does it mean having things that buzz inside you and a stick-out handle?"

"Real isn’t how you are made, when a child loves you for a long, long time, not just to play with, but REALLY loves you, then you become real.  It doesn’t happen all at once," said the Skin Horse.

"Does it hurt?" asked the Rabbit.

"Sometimes," said the Skin Horse, for he was always truthful. "When you are Real you don’t mind being hurt."

"Does it happen all at once" he asked, "or bit by bit?"

"It doesn’t happen all at once. You become.  It takes a long time … generally, by the time you are real, most of your hair has been loved off and your eyes drop out and you get loose in the joints and very shabby.  But these things don’t matter at all, because once you are Real, you can’t be ugly, except to people who don’t understand."

"I suppose you are real?" said the Rabbit. And then he wished he had not said it, for he thought the Skin Horse might be sensitive.

But the Skin Horse only smiled.

          Creating a Metaphor

A successful metaphor must first pace the client’s current experience by using the same sequence of steps, rep systems and submodalities as his present state. The content does not have to be the same, in fact the more different and interesting the better. There needs to be a smooth transition to the desired state or to the learning you want them to take with them.

So, someone presents you with their ‘problem,’ lets say its "learning NLP is hard!"

We have a number of ways to approach this:

Direct Metaphor: where you are making a direct comparison between their situation and the story you are telling. You might talk to them about how when you were very young you learned the alphabet and it seemed incomprehensible when you first looked at it.

Indirect Metaphor: where you are making an indirect comparison, drawing parallels which are not immediately obvious (but are likely to be spotted by the person’s unconscious mind). You might talk about sorting out the cupboard and be quite creative!

Stories: have been used for thousands of years … because they work as a means for teaching and passing on history, culture and beliefs! They are also interesting. Here you have a choice of thousands of stories, parables, fables, moments in films you saw, articles you read … the choice is endless!

If you want to get fast success and you work with an expert you do not need to be of any level of suggestibilitity you just need the right therapist! I have included below this article some quite common suggestibility tests often used.  I have discovered that more importantly that suggestibility is the ability of the hypnotherapist to use hypnosis as an application of NLP. In plain english, your beliefs are not fixed, beliefs can be changed and a top therapist will simply arrange this quickly first so that you can get into the desired trance state to get the change that you want fast. To discover more simply call 07976 431 141 and I will explain it to you.

          Suggestibility tests

Some people use "suggestibility tests" to see how easily (or not) a person will go into a trance. The two most common are:

          1.    The Dictionary / Balloon.

"Please hold both your hands outstretched and close your eyes. Now turn one hand over and imagine as clearly as you can, a large helium balloon tied to your hand which is palm down and a huge unabridged dictionary in your other hand. Now open your eyes."

          2.    The Hand Clasp.

"Please take your hands and clasp them together, and close your eyes. Now notice your fingers are becoming more and more tightly clasped together. Tighter and tighter. Now try to open them. Try to pull your hands apart. Try and find you cannot. The harder you try the harder they clasp themselves together."

Personally I wouldn’t bother with them unless the client wants to get a sense of what hypnosis feels like before going in deeply. If that’s the case, just do one and then discuss how it was for the client. As long as you’ve got good rapport, trust, a client willing to follow simple suggestions, and control over your own voice (tonality, tempo and pace) you’ll be able to induce trance.

          What is self hypnosis?

Think of a time when you were really relaxed, and take a few moments to remember what it was like to experience it. See what you saw, hear what you heard, and feel what you felt when you were experiencing that state.

To what degree were you able to enter back into the state? The process of remembering the experience and entering back into it is itself an example of self hypnosis!

Sometimes people say "But I wasn’t able to enter into it as fully as I did when it was really happening. I still knew it wasn’t real." That’s a good thing! Part of why you’ve survived up to now is because you can differentiate between things that are really happening and things that are made up. Well done – keep up the good work!

Hypnosis allows someone else to control you?

If you’ve seen footage of Derren Brown getting someone to think of something and then Brown reading their mind, or of Paul McKenna getting someone to dance like a chicken or eat an onion as though it were an apple, it’s probably quite easy to believe that hypnosis allows someone else to control you.

These examples of hypnosis in ‘entertainment’ situations take place in a very specific context. The people who take part are typically ‘pre-screened’ to ensure that they are willing to engage fully in the experience for a limited time and in a specific environment.

People who go along with a stage hypnotist typically report that they felt as though they could have stopped at any time, but they just didn’t want to. If they wanted to, they would have. The people who didn’t want to take part didn’t even put themselves forward in the first place.

All hypnosis is ultimately self-hypnosis. No matter what hypnotic words a person might say to you, it’s ultimately you who translates those words, makes sense of them, and decides whether to accept or reject their suggestions.

I do not believe it’s possible to hypnotise someone into doing something that contravenes their personal values or beliefs. Having said this, there are a number of factors that can increase the likelihood of a person’s suggestions being accepted by someone else, including the following:

          • The intention of the person offering suggestions
          • Relationship and rapport between the two people
          • Authority of the person giving the suggestions
          • The state of the person receiving the suggestions
          • The fit of the suggestions with the recipient’s values and beliefs
          • Voice tone and pace
          • Type of language used, etc.

The fact is we are all hypnotists. Think of a person who you feel really good being with. Now think of someone who brings you down whenever you are with them.

Chances are both these people are excellent hypnotists. The way they use their state, body language and verbal communications is able to influence your state in significant and powerful ways.

The most effective way to avoid coming under the ‘spell’ of everyday hypnotists is to learn hypnosis yourself. When you understand how hypnosis works, and how its patterns can be used accidentally to a person’s detriment, it’s fairly straightforward to avoid being accidentally hypnotised.

You can learn how to the power of hypnosis in 48 hours on this exciting course here.

Trance and Inducing Trance – How does verbal hypnosis work?

If you can change your mind, you can change your life. What you believe creates the actual fact. The greatest revolution of my generation is the discovery that individuals, by changing their inner attitudes of mind, can change the outer aspects of their lives.

          William James, 1897

When a person reads or hears a word, their unconscious mind sorts through the internal references they have for that word in order to make meaning of it. The unconscious does this very quickly; so quickly in fact that we’re usually not aware of the process taking place. For example, take the sentence:

The tree swayed in the breeze.

In order to make sense of this sentence, you must have an internal reference for tree, breeze, and swayed. If the sentence made sense to you, then you probably weren’t even aware of the search taking place. You may even find that you can gather information about your internal reference (E.g. by asking yourself "What colour is the tree?")  The following sentence may be trickier:

Wem polf bagglimed aj riq hoojar

Most English-speakers don’t have an internal reference for these words – "Your search has returned no matches", to quote my favourite search engine.

The underlying theme is that your unconscious mind can hear and interpret things differently than your conscious mind.  Your unconscious mind looks for patterns whilst the conscious mind listens to the words.  In hypnosis you are almost doing a magic trick by keeping the conscious mind occupied whilst you are speaking directly to the client’s unconscious processes.

This principle of internal searches is the basis of how verbal hypnosis works, and it’s an important part of how Erickson got the amazing results he did. In the 1970s, Richard Bandler and John Grinder spent eleven months modelling him. One of their outputs was "The Milton Model", a kind of ‘how-to’ guide for using language to get the same kinds of results (linguistically) as Erickson.

Milton Erickson used language systematically in his hypnotic work, often in unusual ways. These patterns were first described by Richard Bandler and John Grinder in their book Patterns of the Hypnotic Techniques of Milton H. Erickson, M. D. Vol. I.

The preparation for trance otherwise called hypnosis

          1.    Don’t expect to feel hypnotised

          2.    Do expect to feel relaxed

          3.    You ARE in control

          4.    Trance is about learning how to go into trance.
